SETI Surveys at Arecibo: SETI@home, Astropulse, and SERENDIP

We propose to continue use of the Arecibo telescope and the ALFA receiver to perform non-interfering commensal observations. During these observations we will utilize the existing and installed SERENDIP V.v spectrometer to perform detection of narrow band signals. We will also use the existing and installed SETI@home II data recorder to record time domain data for processing through the SETI@home and Astropulse volunteer distributed computing pro jects. The surveys we propose use signal persistence over time as a candidate identification mechanism, therefor is is neccessary that we observe the entire sky multiple times. Our current median number of observations of a spot on the sky with the ALFA receiver is 1. Outreach Abstract: This proposal will continue the use of Arecibo for the most sensitive surveys for extraterrestrial signals ever performed. These survey will utilize a special purpose signal processor known as SERENDIP V.v. We will also record data that will be sent out to hundreds of thousands of volunteers who donate their idle computer time to SETI@home. Description of Observer Equipment: SERENDIP V.v and the SETI@home data recorder. Sp ecial Equipment or setup: Regarding data requirement below, we provide our own disks which are switched by the operators when full. Disks are shipped to and from Berkeley via a shipping service in Berkeley provided containers. Should network capability ever exceed our recorder bandwidth by a large enough amount would would like to change to transferring data over the networks.
