A Global Campaign for Precision Timing of a Millisecond Pulsar

We request a single 3-hour session on PSR J1713+0747, the most precisely timed millisecond pulsar, that will serve as the cornerstone for a 24-hr international campaign involving telescopes in North American, Europe, and Australia. The purpose of this campaign is to understand the different contributions to the timing error budget, to perform a detailed study of scintillation properties, pulse jitter, and pulse profile evolution with frequency, and to determine timing offsets between the different telescopes. These goals are all crucial to the International Pulsar Timing Array effort and to shortening the time to detection of gravitational waves using pulsar timing. Outreach Abstract: Pulsars are rotating neutron stars whose stable spin rates can be used as clocks. Our overall pro ject is to use the best pulsars to detect ripples in space time -- gravitational waves-- which were predicted to exist by Albert Einstein from his General Theory of Relativity. The specific proposal to Arecibo is part of an international campaign using multiple telescopes around the world to monitor one of the best pulsars for a 24-hour period in order to better understand its properties and limitations as a clock. The observations also aim to improve the measurement precision of the pulses so that the sensitivity to gravitational waves can be improved.
