Studies of Scattered Pulsars on the Longest Baselines

We propose observations of strong pulsars on the longest VLBI baselines yet attained, up to 300,000 km. Our goals are to determine the distance and anisotropy of the material responsible for scattering of nearby pulsars, and to seek substructure in scattering disks of a few more distant pulsars. Outreach Abstract: We wish to use the Arecibo radio telescope in concert with a radio telescope aboard the Russian RadioAstron spacecraft. This spacecraft is in a high orbit, extending out to nearly the distance of the moon. Using this extremely wide separation, we can study the turbulent, hot gas in space between the stars. This gas deflects and scatters radio waves from all astrophysical sources. From our observations, we hope to learn how far from us this gas is located, and how large and how small the gas clouds can be. From this knowledge, we can learn more about what forms this gas, and how it affects observations of radio stars and galaxies.
