A Volume-Limited, Complete View of HI in the z=0 Galaxy Population

To build the first truly complete view of the z=0 galaxy population in full environmental context, we propose 21cm observations of 118 galaxies needed to achieve a 95% complete HI census for the 1550-galaxy, volume-limited RESOLVE survey. The requested A-semester data combined with our approved B-semester data will statistically sample halo environments ranging from massive clusters to low-density regimes including large-scale filaments and walls. Uniquely among local surveys, RESOLVE traces evolutionary processes from dwarf to giant galaxies across well characterized, representative environments. HI data are essential to core RESOLVE science goals: measuring gas fractions, the baryonic mass function, and the baryonic mass-velocity relation, all as a function of galaxy properties/environment. These fundamental constraints on galaxy evolution models depend on robust and complete HI data. The resulting volume-limited HI census will have fantastic legacy value and follow-up potential. Outreach Abstract: As the fuel for star formation, hydrogen gas reservoirs have a critical impact on the evolution of galaxies, and these reservoirs depend on cosmic environment. Just like the human population census reveals birth, death, and demographic information for government planning, a complete census of the galaxy population across a range of environments may teach us how gas is used and replenished and even where undetected gas may be hidden. To this end, we are performing a census of neutral hydrogen gas for the RESOLVE survey, which consists of all 1550 galaxies in a huge volume of the relatively nearby universe. Unlike most astronomical surveys, this "volume-limited" census is not biased toward bigger/brighter galaxies but fairly counts smaller/fainter galaxies in which gas properties vary more dramatically. Our survey will reveal the galaxy gas inventory, constraining gas consumption, replenishment, and hidden gas stores as a function of environment.

Time Constraints (Must Be Justified in the Prop osal Text) Due to the low declinations of our sources, requested sessions intervals are very closely matched to the RAs of our targets. We have generated and tested codes to quickly generate command-line scripts for a 2


given run that can then be initiated by the operator. This makes observing a large number of sessions manageable and flexible. This observing method was successfully employed in fall 2013, spring 2014, and fall 2014.
