Proposal Type: General Category: Sub-Category: Observation Category: Time Requested this semester: Hours already used for this pro ject: Additional Hours required to complete pro ject: Minimum Useful Time: Expected Data Storage: Prop osal Title: ABSTRACT: AGES is an HI survey specifically designed to investigate various galactic environments with higher sensitivity than ALFALFA, and also with better spatial and velocity resolution than previous HI surveys. Science goals include: the HI mass function in different environments, the identification of gaseous tidal features and isolated neutral gas clouds, the spatial distribution and properties of HI-selected galaxies, and comparisons with numerical models of galaxy formation. We request 123.5h in addition to that already granted for the fall 2015 semester to complete AGES observations of the NGC 7619 field. Also known as the Pegasus I cluster, this is a very interesting transition region with some characteristics of both cluster and group environments. Outreach Abstract: The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (normally known as AGES) is using the Arecibo Telescope to search for galaxies in a number of quite different areas of the local universe. These vary from the Virgo Cluster, where there are huge numbers of galaxies very close together, to the Local Void, a region where the few galaxies to be found are very spread out. How many other galaxies are in a region, and how close together they are, affects the way galaxies develop, but we are also finding other differences between the different areas that are left over from the time galaxies were first forming. By investigating these differences we are finding out more about how galaxies formed and how they are still developing today.
