Proposal Type: General Category: Observation Category: Time Requested this semester: Hours Next Semester: Hours already used for this pro ject: Additional Hours required to complete pro ject: Minimum Useful Time: Expected Data Storage: Prop osal Title: ABSTRACT: The NASA support for the planetary radar program at Arecibo Observatory has just been augmented from 500 hours/year to 800 hours/year. The hours devoted to near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) has been increased from at least 300 hours to at least 500 hours. This proposal covers the time request for the second-best imaging opportunities, radar astrometry, and systematic survey time. Radar characterization of NEAs is valuable, even at the lower signal-to-noise levels that precludes high-resolution imaging. Overall shape determination, astrometry to improve the orbit solution, and regular surveys to observe new ob jects and targets of opportunity all yield valuable scientific results. Outreach Abstract: Near-Earth asteroids are interesting for a variety of reasons. They are left-over material from the formation of the planets, and tell us about the early Solar System conditions. They are the most accessible spacecraft mission targets in terms of fuel, and may be a valuable resource for human activity in space. These bodies also represent an impact hazard to the Earth, although if their orbits are known with sufficient accuracy, we can predict and possibly even prevent a future impact, if we have enough warning. Radar observations can determine orbits with superb accuracy, so we make every effort to observe all potentially hazardous asteroids within our reach. We also are characterizing as many as possible to evaluate future mission targets, and potential resources. With the 300 hours of telescope requested here, we expect to observe about 100 near-Earth asteroid in the coming year.
