Completing the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES)

AGES is an HI survey specifically designed to investigate various galactic environments with higher sensitivity than ALFALFA, and also with better spatial and velocity resolution than previous HI surveys. Science goals include: the HI mass function in different environments, the identification of gaseous tidal features and isolated neutral gas clouds, the spatial distribution and properties of HI-selected galaxies, and comparisons with numerical models of galaxy formation. We request 925.25h to complete AGES, including 223.25h in the fall semester that we expect to be scheduled in fall 2013 but which had not been observed by September 3. Our spring request includes 244.75h for the Local Void, which can also be scheduled in the fall semester. Outreach Abstract: The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (normally known as AGES) is using the Arecibo Telescope to search for galaxies in a number of quite different areas of the local universe. These vary from the Virgo Cluster, where there are huge numbers of galaxies very close together, to the Local Void, a region where the few galaxies to be found are very spread out. How many other galaxies are in a region, and how close together they are, affects the way galaxies develop, but we are also finding other differences between the different areas that are left over from the time galaxies were first forming. By investigating these differences we are finding out more about how galaxies formed and how they are still developing today.

Constraints on scheduling: The Turn On Galfa Survey (TOGS) operates commensally with AGES and 15 minutes for startup and calibration is scheduled at the start or end of AGES session. The TOGS calibration takes a little under 10 minutes, and the operator takes around 5 minutes to start TOGS (which is done prior to starting the AGES command script). While the calibration can be done at any point during the session, TOGS obviously has to be started at the start; we thus request that when possible the TOGS calibration and startup time is scheduled at the start of the AGES session. TOGS calibration adds 41.25h to the time request for this semester.
