PROJECT SUMMARY


Intellectual Merit:

In Puerto Rico, education and research in Astronomy-Astrophysics is mostly
conducted at the University of Puerto Rico and at the National Astronomy
and Ionosphere Center. UPR is mostly an undergraduate teaching
institution, and NAIC is a national facility where all observing time is
granted via peer review process, open to all researchers. Although not
unknown, opportunities for undergraduates to gain hands-on experience by
building equipment for the 305-m telescope has been limited. Since, NAIC is
working towards acquiring a 12-m class antenna to be sited near the 305-m
dish, undergraduate student's involvements in all aspect of this telescope
seems a natural way to train the next generation of astronomers. In
addition, UPR faculty and the NAIC staff have overlapping areas of research
which will make use of the small antenna in addition to the 305-meter dish
and its complements of receivers and instrumentation, and optical
facilities at Gettysburg & Flagstaff. This proposal thus, aims to establish
a partnership for research and education in radio, radar & optical
astronomy between UPR, the NAIC in Arecibo, and Gettysburg College (PA).
Such collaboration will foster intellectual growth by providing an umbrella
organization within which to conduct efficient research programs in
astronomy astrophysics in a coordinated manner. The benefit of the program
will reach even a wider population via an excellent outreach program for
students and high-school teachers. The undergraduate students participating
in this program will be more likely to enter graduate programs nationwide,
thereby increasing the representation of a minority group in the field.

Broader Impact:

The impact of this project will be substantial. Undergraduates at UPR-
HUMACAO and other participating institutions will be given a unique
opportunity to engage in undergraduate research and to interact with
visiting scientists and students at Arecibo with the unavoidable
consequence of being motivated to pursue graduate school.

New research capabilities will be made available, which has the prospect of
attracting even more faculty into research, thereby increasing the pool of
active scientists on the island establishing a credible research
environment in the south-east part of the island.

Through the outreach program, public awareness of radio astronomy and
indeed of physical sciences will be much enhanced.

The phase reference antenna, HAAT intended to be used in augmenting VLBI
observations, can also be used in astrometric and geodetic observations.
The potential implementation of a HAAT antenna has generated interest in
the geodesic community since Puerto Rico is situated on the Caribbean
tectonic plate whose motion is quite complicated.
