Current and Future Pulsar Science with the Arecibo Telescope

A Y2K Workshop at Arecibo - March 12-14 2000

First Announcement - Invitation to Participate
================================================================================

Dear Colleague,

We are pleased to officially announce our plans to hold a Pulsar Workshop
at the Arecibo Observatory, Puerto Rico, on March 12-14 2000.

By this time it will be about 5 years since the last pulsar workshop here,
organized by Kiriaki Xilouris, Jim Cordes and Chris Salter to look forward
to a new era of observations with the upgraded telescope.

Since that time, much progress has been made:

(1) The new era is here - i.e. the upgrade has essentially been completed
(2) Many groups have installed their own state-of-the-art instrumentation
(3) NAIC has provided public-access narrow and wide-bandwidth instruments
(4) Regular high-precision timing observations have running for > 2 years

We thus feel that it is both timely and appropriate to hold a workshop
in 2000 at the Observatory. The main aims of this workshop are as follows:

(1) Review new scientific results since regular operations resumed (mid-1998)
Pulsar observing activities during this time include high-precision timing,
drift scan searches, targeted searches and HI-absorption measurements.
These sessions will hopefully include some contributions from theoretical
colleagues discussing useful (and understandable) scientific goals for
future pulsar observations. In addition, contributions from observers at
other telescopes who have results relevent to future AO observations
(e.g. multibeam surveys) would be most welcome.

(2) Discuss practical issues for observers at telescope. This includes a
review of the interface to the observing system, summaries of existing
instrumentation at the observatory, future plans for instrumentation,
as well as a general discussion of what (realistic) features observers
would like to see in the control room.

(3) Optomise current large-scale observational programmes, e.g. the monthly
high-precision pulsar timing observations. Discuss future observational
projects for Arecibo. Possibilities include multibeam surveys and VLBI.

A VERY preliminary programme of sessions during this workshop is

Sun 12 March 2000

Morning: arrival at the observatory
Afternoon: Either (a) tours of the observatory (for those who wish)
Or.... (b) discussion meeting for pulsar timers
Or.... (c) body surfing down at the beach
Evening: BBQ at the Observatory Pool

Mon 13 March 2000

0900-0920 Welcome
0920-1040 AO Observational Results (4 contributed talks)
1040-1100 Coffee
1100-1220 AO Observational Results (4 contributed talks)
1220-1400 Lunch
1400-1500 Theory meets Observation (3 contributed talks)
1500-1530 Coffee

(see http://www.naic.edu/~pulsar - for a current summary)
0930-1000 Overview of pulsar observing practicalities at AO
1000-1030 What features present/potential users would like to see (discussion!)
1030-1100 Coffee
1100-1130 Future Projects: A multibeam survey
1130-1200 Future Projects: Pulsar VLBI
1200-1230 Future Instrumentation Plans
1230-1400 Lunch
1400-1700 Time presently reserved for discusion/additional talks....

If you feel that this programme is of interest to you, and would like
to attend the meeting, please fill in the attached registration form
below and email it to Dunc Lorimer (dunc@naic.edu). Due to space
limitations and overall logistical requirements, we can only guarantee
participation and accomodation for up to 30 visiting
scientists. Please send in your completed application form ASAP ---
incoming forms will be evaluated on a first-come-first-served basis!

Unfortunately, we will not be able to accomodate every participant
at the Observatory. Shared-room accomodation will be allocated either
at the Observatory or at El Buen Cafe Hotel in down-town Arecibo.
The cost of sharing a room at El Buen Cafe is $40 per person per night.
This price is subject to change and we are presently negotiating
a breakfast for those staying at El Buen Cafe. The accomodation
at the observatory is about $30 per night. Breakfast can be obtained
from the staff cantine. Those of you who prefer not to share a room
should indicate this on the form - we will do our best to find you
a room. Again, due to various constraints, we cannot guarantee every
participant a single room. Accomodation will at the Observatory will
also be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

In order to cover various administrative costs, food, and provide
a small workshop memento, we expect all participants to contribute 50 US$
towards the workshop budget. Payments should be made upon arrival.

We are looking forward to compiling an exciting scientific programme
for the workshop and hope to see you down here next March. The final
programme will be distributed shortly after Feb 1 in Y2K....

with best wishes

Dunc Lorimer (on behalf of the LOC)
