29jan16: radioRedentor turning off 5Ghz
providers
last updated 29jan16
Intro:
The 19jan16 road
trip that dana and i took showed that the Radio Redentor tower
(above Utuado) had internet providers transmitting below the 5150
bottom edge of the U-NII band.
Angel contacted the tower engineer and scheduled
a test for friday 29jan16.
The test:
The test setup was:
- position azimuth=100, za=18 deg. The cband azimuth
spins showed this to be a peak for many of the 5 ghz
transmissions below 5150.
- The mock spectrometer was set for:
- 7 bands, 8192 chan/band, 172Mhz, 1 second intergrations.
- The band center frequencies
were:4900,5000,5100,5200,5300,5040,5500
- Note that band 5 was a typo.. it was supposed to be 5400..
but i typed in the wrong value.. so i skipped displaying
this band
- The mock spectrometer was run continuously during the test.
- We communicated the the tower engineer over the phone
- He turned off each internet provider for about 1 minute, then
turned them back on
- turning off was fast, turning back on took up to a minute.
- he turned off the following providers:
- DM wireless
- kxXpressNet
- 4Net
- SecureNet
- DM wireless (we repeated this one)
Dynamic spectra of the test
Dynamic spectra were made for each of the 6
mock bands. The computation was:
- Input the 1500 secs of data
- average the polarizations
- flatten the spectra using the median bandpass for the 1500
secs
- for each freq range, find about 500 channels that did not have
rfi in them
- average over these channels and then divide each of these
1500 numbers into the flattened spectra
- this removes the total power variation from the sky.
- Draw a horizontal line where each turn off occurred..label the
lines with the provider
- The off cycle normally lasted for 60 seconds.
The dynamic spectra are show in the table below:
freqRange

- 4net was turned off after ksXpress
- There was still no users in these 2 bands
- i don't know whether 4net uses them or the ksXpernet
users hadn't reconnected yet.

- Angel contacted the owner of dm wireless on 29jan16. He said
he would look into turning off the illegal transmissions.
- We need to report this to the fcc..
