START OBSERVATION:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Observing instructions for simultaneous PALFA/ZOA/RRL observations using the
Mock spectrometers.

On CIMA, choose the "untested engineering version". This is the only one that
will support the PULSARON version we will need for these observations.

The "Start New CIMA Session" window appears. Type in P2030 in the "Project
number" box, your initials in the "Observer" box and press the "Pulsar"
button in front of the "Observing mode".

In the "Receiver selection menu" select "ALFA", then press the "Accept" button.

Press the "Load configuration" button.

This opens up the "Load CIMA configuration file". There, select the
"ALFA_P_ZOA_RRL_Mocks+WAPPs.conf" file. Then press the "Load and apply" button.

This will do everything: point at 1903+0327 (in the present configuration),
which is a good test of the Mock spectrometers and their timing for a high
DM MSP, configure the IF/LO system and configure the back-ends.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SET LEVELS

Click on the "Backend control" window. Two windows appear: a tall, narrow one,
with the parameters of the Mock spectrometer, and a wide, short one with the
parameters for the WAPPs.

----------------

- Set WAPP Levels (a good back-up for now, particularly to make sure we have
good search data and to find the binarity of PSR J1900+03):

In the "WAPP configuration Menu" window, change the _Configuration_ of the
wapps from "sum chans, 3-level" to "2 chan, 3-level" (in the pull-down menu).
CLICK THE "Apply" BUTTON.

Click on the "Power Control" and "Power Monitor" buttons.

On the "Power level control window", press the "Adjust ALL" button.

On the "CIMA power level monitor", all the WAPP levels should go to values
close to 1.0, except perhaps pol. B of beam 6. If others have problems
reaching , call me (1 787 878 2612, ext. 382).

In the "Power level control window", press the "Close" button.

In the "WAPP configuration Menu" window, change the _Configuration_ of the
wapps from "2 chan, 3-level" to "sum chans, 3-level" (in the pull-down menu).
CLICK THE "Apply" BUTTON.

Press the "Accept" button.

----------------

- Set Mock Spectrometer Levels:

In the "Mock spectrometer configuration menu", just click on the "Adjust Mock
power" button, near the lower right corner. You should see the power levels
appearing in the "CIMA observation log display" (where all the other warnings
appear). Normal values should be of the order of 0.5.

Press the "Accept" button.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are ready to Observe!

Make a test observation of 1903+0327, where you are now. To do that, go to the
"CIMA observation menu" and click on the "Observe" button.

If everything seems to be well (one should essentially be able at some
point to "prepfold" the 1903+0327 observation), then go to the "CIMA main menu"
on the left and click on the "Command file observing" button.
The "Command file observing window" appears.

In this window, click on the "Load" button. The "Command file selection menu"
appears.

In the latter menu, use the mouse to select the day's .cmd schedule, then
click on the "Accept" button.

In the "Command file observing window", press the "Run" button.

That should be it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

END THE OBSERVATION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the "Command file observing window":

When you reach the last (visible) source, press the "Stop" button if you can
finish it, or if you absolutely have to stop, press the "Abort" button.

Then press the "Close" button.

In the "CIMA main menu":

Press the "Exit" button.
