Pleiades VLA Survey Area Comparisons

Pleiades VLA Survey Area Comparisons

Thesis Data

Here are six comparison images of the central nebula region from my 1998 AAS dissertation talk. Each image is 4.3 degrees in size, and centered at [1950] 3h 43m +24d. A Postscript copy is available.

Left Side: Multiwavelength images of the dust in the reflection nebula.

Right Side: Detailed HI 21cm line emission near the Pleiades, imaged by the 2 x 2 degree VLA-D survey (inset box); large-scale structure was mapped with the Green Bank 140-ft. telescope.

The symbols mark the positions of stars which have been studied spectroscopically for interstellar absorption features associated with the reflection nebula. The WISP ultraviolet image has been improved over what is shown here, so do not take the version below as final. Also, the VLA data coverage has been extended (see following section).

VLA Survey Extension

These images compare the post-thesis extended VLA survey with other datasets. The Schmidt map used in the comparison is not the final version however, and is subject to PSF subtraction and background level problems. See previous section for an improved rendition.

Schmidt optical (4400 A) grayscale image of Pleiades cluster with IRAS 100 micron contours. Both are displayed on a log scale.
Grayscale image of VLA HI 21cm line emission at +10.3 km/s LSR with IRAS 100 micron contours. The IRAS is displayed on a log scale.
Grayscale image of VLA HI 21cm line emission at +10.3 km/s LSR with 12CO total column contours from Bally & White.
Crude attempt at a truecolor image made from Schmidt (blue), VLA (green), and IRAS (red) data.
