Introduction to Radio Astronomy for us Non-PhD People

Lisa Wray, Arecibo Observatory

Abstract:
In the early twentieth century, the field of radio astronomy emerged as a result of a serendipitous discovery of cosmic "static" over long distance telephone lines, and an amateur radio operator's dedication and pioneering spirit. It was fostered by WWII radar technology and the US-USSR space race. Prior to 1950, the science of astronomy was fiercely protected by optical astronomers, but soon the opportunities for science in the vast radio and microwave spectrum were accepted. This talk introduces the engineering and briefly the science behind this sublime and fascinating marriage of electrical engineering and astrophysics.
