Searching for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligences: Refining the Enterprise

The Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligences (SETI) being conducted by a few teams around the world, including one based at Birmingham (UK), is concerned with the simple question: "Are we alone?". Some related questions include: "How would we Communicate with ETIs?" (CETI) and "How does work on AI and TI help us think about ETI and viceversa?". Two further questions of note are i) 'Fermi's paradox' - "Where IS everybody?" ; ii) "How do you actually do the searching?". The approach that is taken by the Birmingham team (includes Paulo Freire at Arecibo) is to specify and conduct a targeted search for targeted signals, using pulsars as beacons. This is a new way of answering the last question above and the implications/requirements of targeting (cognitive and semiotic issues, as well as technical ones) will be discussed. Some reflections on late acquistion of astronomical skills and interests will be offered to lighten the mood!
