The data-taking computer is located in the control room in Building 1.
By the time of your arrival at Arecibo you should have a project directory
available to you on this computer. If you do not have a directory, ask your
FoT (Friend of the Telescope) to have a project area made for you.
To run the AO-Control GUI (online):
- Log-in to the data taking computer using the log-in name and password
provided by the on-duty Telescope Operator.
- Ask the Operator if you have control of the telescope
- Ask the Operator to turn off the TV cameras in the dome (so that it no
longer shows the receiver floor) to prevent unnecessary RFI.
- Type ``gui'' in the data-taking window
In the Main GUI Window:
- Enter your name and proposal i.d. and click ``Line''
- Choose the receiver/IFLO set-up you wish to use
- Click ``Calibrate'' to run a calibration scan or two
(you probably should do this a few times during the night).
- Click ``Catalog'' and choose your source catalog
- Click ``Visible Sources'' and choose the source you wish to observe.
Then click ``Yes'' to point the telescope
In the Spectral Line Observer's Widget
- Choose your set up, either by picking the individual parameters
or through loading a file made off line (or go through the set up procedure
described above)
- Review and save your set-up (to be safe)
- Click ``Observe'' to observe your source.
When you're done:
- Click ``Exit VX-Works'' to exit AO-Control and move your data
