A Quick Look

The data-taking computer is located in the control room in Building 1. By the time of your arrival at Arecibo you should have a project directory available to you on this computer. If you do not have a directory, ask your FoT (Friend of the Telescope) to have a project area made for you.

To run the AO-Control GUI (online):

  1. Log-in to the data taking computer using the log-in name and password provided by the on-duty Telescope Operator.
  2. Ask the Operator if you have control of the telescope
  3. Ask the Operator to turn off the TV cameras in the dome (so that it no longer shows the receiver floor) to prevent unnecessary RFI.
  4. Type ``gui'' in the data-taking window

    In the Main GUI Window:

  5. Enter your name and proposal i.d. and click ``Line''
  6. Choose the receiver/IFLO set-up you wish to use
  7. Click ``Calibrate'' to run a calibration scan or two (you probably should do this a few times during the night).
  8. Click ``Catalog'' and choose your source catalog
  9. Click ``Visible Sources'' and choose the source you wish to observe.
Then click ``Yes'' to point the telescope

In the Spectral Line Observer's Widget

  10. Choose your set up, either by picking the individual parameters or through loading a file made off line (or go through the set up procedure described above)
  11. Review and save your set-up (to be safe)
  12. Click ``Observe'' to observe your source.

    When you're done:

  13. Click ``Exit VX-Works'' to exit AO-Control and move your data
