A Checklist of Things to Have Before You Observe

If you were to observe for proposal number a9999, upon arrival at the Observatory you will be provided with:

  1. a computer login and initiating password
  2. a project area attached to the observing computer (this is typically called, i.e. /share/obs4/usr/a9999)
  3. a share-disk area for off-line data reduction
Before you get onto the telescope you need:

  1. A Source List (preferably placed in your project area on the observing computer - see below)
  2. Your Spectral Line Set-up Files(s) (.sls & .par) (when generated by the gui, these will automatically be placed in your project area on the observing computer)
  3. A copy of these instructions.
  4. Food (at least if you're observing at night).

NOTE - Placing your src.list onto observer:
The easiest way to place your source list onto your project area is simply to copy it over from whichever local machine you are currently on. When you do this, though, be aware that you must change the permissions on your source list (and any other file you want ready access to) so that, when you are logged in to take data (your log-in name when observing is "dtusr" and NOT your account name), so still have ready access to your files.

So a person whose account name is jsmith, whose project number is a9999, and whose source list is called src.list, might do the following:

camuy-jsmith% cp src.list /share/obs4/usr/a9999/.
camuy-jsmith% cd /share/obs4/usr/a9999
camuy-jsmith% chmod 777 *
If you get the message "a9999: No such file or directory" your directory has not been set-up. Go talk to your FoT.
