Passport and Visa:

As Puerto Rico is part of the USA, visas are not required for travel from the mainland USA. However, do bring your passport as immigration controls are common at the San Juan airport. Also, for non-immigrants who live in the US, have your I-94 card (plus I-20/DS-2019 forms if applicable) with you as well. For the citizens of the 27 countries who participate in US visa waiver program and carry a Machine Readable Passport, you could enter the US without a visa for up to 90 days. To see whether you are eligible, visit the Visa Waiver Program page on the US State Department web site. For information on visa requirements for citizens of Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda, visit this link. People coming from other countries will be required to apply for a visa, please visit the Visa page of US state Depatment web site. A letter of invitation will be provided by the school in these circumstances. Please contact us as soon as possible.

Arriving in Puerto Rico:

The only way to travel to Puerto Rico is by aeroplane - with almost all flights coming into San Juan's main airport - the Luis Munoz International Airport. The observatory will provide a shuttle service to transport people from the airport to their accommodation and the observatory. However, it is also very easy to rent a car at the airport, if you would prefer. The program of the Summer School will start on Sunday Morning, so we recommend that you arrive at San Juan on Saturday, July 9, 2005.

Lodging and Meals:

Participants will be accommodated on-site, or in a nearby hotel, in shared rooms. Meals will be provided by the School. Participants will not be charged for lodging, meals, and transportation (from/to airport and from/to hotel). If you do not wish to share a room with another participant, then you would need to make your own hotel reservation. Please note that transportation will not be provided in this case (rental cars are recommended). For a list of nearby hotels, click here.

Weather in Puerto Rico:

Puerto Rico has a tropical climate - which for the Summer months means very warm (80-90 F) and very humid - often with thunder storms in the late afternoon. Weather is also very constant, with the similar pattern being usually repeated every day. A weather forecast can be found at Yahoo Weather page. Therefore, do not forget your swimming costume.

Language:

The main language of the Island is Spanish, however many people speak some degree of English, so it is quite easy to communicate. Plus most people are very willing to try and are very helpful with directions.

Computer and Phone Access:

Computer access: Will be provided at the observatory.
Phone access: If you need to place local (i.e. in the island), long distance, or international calls, we recommend that you bring a calling card with you. Keep in mind that some calling cards may not work for calls placed from Puerto Rico, so check the service area of the calling card with the vendor or the company.
