Scientific Rationale

The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) is a new generation radio telescope which will observe the low frequency sky with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. The assembly of the instrument core stations and long baseline stations is well under way. LOFAR is scheduled to deliver its first major science results, such as the Million Source Sky Survey (MSSS), this year. Due to its polarisation features and its resolution and large collecting area which provides unmatched sensitivities in the low radio waveband, LOFAR will be an extremely powerful instrument to study the Magnetic Universe. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together scientist who are interested in using this up-coming unique facility for studying magnetic fields in the Universe. Astrophysical magnetic field science is one of the LOFAR Key Science projects. Participants of the workshop are invited to give brief science presentations. The main aim of the workshop is to foster discussions about the work plan, software developments and other tasks related to the Magnetism Key Science Project (MKSP) as well as the commissioning phase and data analysis.
