Abstract:
We set limits to the amount of intra-supercluster gas in the Shapley
Supercluster, using COBE DMR data to search for the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect
and HEAO-1 A2 and ROSAT All-Sky Survey data to search for diffuse X-ray
emission. We modeled the X-ray emission allowing for known point sources and a
gradient in galactic emission. We found no evidence for intra-supercluster gas
following a truncated isothermal model distribution. We concluded that
the Shapley Supercluster does not hold much more hot () large
scale diffuse intra-supercluster gas than the average baryon density derived
from standard nucleosynthesis theories. The next generation of satellites may
detect gas in the intra-supercluster environment. These satellites will have an
important cosmological impact, since they will enable precise estimates of the
baryonic content of superclusters.
