Some advice about accessing the PWF Linux system over a network connection.
In addition to the workstations in the Physics PWF, there is a server system accessible over the network from Colleges and other parts of the University, whose address is linux.phy.pwf.cam.ac.uk.
This machine gives you the same Linux operating system as the PWF workstations, and access to the same programs, libraries and files, but is only accessible by using a secure network connection. If you want to access the server, you must be running one of the secure shell clients on your local machine.
The exact mechanism for making a secure connection to the server will depend on the operating system running on your local machine.
If you have problems configuring your local system, your College Computer Officer may be able to help.
The first point of contact if there are problems logging on to the PWF server should be a message to the Computing Service Help Desk (help-desk@ucs.cam.ac.uk), copied to the Cavendish Support staff (it-dept@phy.cam.ac.uk), and to the contact address for this class (comp-phy@tcm.phy.cam.ac.uk); explaining the problem with as much detail as you have available and including any error messages that may be generated when you try to log on. The Help Desk will pass on the call to the appropriate people within the Computing Service, who will deal with the problem as soon as they can.
