Overview
This page contains links to various resources I have found useful during my studies. No responsibility is taken for material on external links from any page on this website.
Latex
Latex is a type setting program that is essential for mathematical and scientific publications. If you do not use Latex already, make sure you learn it now before you are required to use it. It will take a few days to get used to it, but then you will never go back to WYSIWYG text editors.
There is a dedicated page here to get you started and point out some useful packages for those who have experience with Latex.
IDL
If you have IDL installed on your home or department computer, it is a great resource for quickly analysing data. I write most code in C++, for which there is limited graphical output. IDL can simply read in your data and display it with a few commands, or better yet, write a .pro file to do it for you. It can even output your results as .eps (encapsulated post script) or .png files to put directly into presentations or reports.
There is a dedicated page here to get you started and point out some useful packages for those who have experience with IDL.
Assorted
There is a collection of useful bits and pieces I have found during my PhD on this dedicated page here.
