Optical Interferometry

A high sensitivity correlator for the MROI

The two major shortcomings of optical/IR interferometry have been its relatively poor sensitivity and an inability to deliver true images. My project will involve the design, testing and optimization of a multi-beam correlator for the Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer (MROI). This will focus on delivering ultra-high sensitivity together with ability to measure multiple Fourier components simultaneously. In parallel, my work will aim to identify a number of new observational programs to be followed up with the instrument so as to best exploit it scientifically when the MROI comes on line in 2011/12.

Characterization of the Atmosphere

Thermal fluctuations in the atmosphere induce changes in the refractive index of the air through which light from astronomical objects propagates. These fluctuations cause aberrations on the incoming wavefront, degrading image quality for large optical telescopes. We decompose the wavefront aberrations into Zernike Polynomials and look at the integration time required for the fluctuations in the atmosphere to average out. By this method we can minimise the integration time dedicated to imaging a reference star to calibrate the optics within our interferometer.

Correlation of Gas and Galaxies

Work carried out with Prof. Simon Morris modelling the correlation of intergalactic gas, as traced by Lyman alpha absorbers, and luminous baryonic matter as traced by galaxies, with the intention of explaining observed phenomena which are poorly understood.
