Cosmic defects and causal theories
E.P.S. Shellard
DAMTP, University of Cambridge
Topological defects are a class of models within a `causal'
paradigm for large-scale structure formation; they provide an al-
ternative against which to test the relative successes of in ation.
Recent CMB results showing the position of a strong primary
Doppler peak place cosmic defects under severe observational pres-
sure. Other speci c signatures which can be used to distinguish
causal models from in ation will also be discussed, including non-
gaussianity, vector modes and polarisation-temperature correla-
tions. Quantitative observational predictions for cosmic strings
will be presented, emphasising small-angle CMB anisotropy. Fi-
nally, we discuss constraints on hybrid models in which both de-
fects and in ation produce perturbations.
