Scalar Field Models for an Expanding Universe

I examine eld theory models which can give rise to an accelerated
expansion (quintessence) at a late epoch. The models examined
have the unique feature that oscillations of the scalar eld lead to
an equation of state that can be negative. A uni ed treatment of
quintessence and CDM based on these models is also discussed.
Additionally I show how a simple and elegant model-independent
ansatz can be used to reconstruct the cosmic equation of state
from a knowledge of the luminosity distance as inferred from high-
z Supernovae observations.
