A critical view on Type Ia Supernovae
as distance indicators
B. Leibundgut
European Southern Observatory
The use of Type Ia Supernovae to measure cosmological distances
relies on several observational facts from nearby supernovae. De-
spite the success of the distance determinations, we still lack a
full understanding of the explosions which give rise to SNe Ia.
A new approach is to compare global parameters like bolometric
(UVOIR) light curves, maximum luminosity, nickel masses, and
explosion velocities for many nearby SNe Ia. The large spread in
observed luminosities and nickel masses points to signi cant dif-
ferences among the explosions. At the same time there are consid-
erable di erences between the di erent light curve shape methods
for nearby supernovae. The various correlations of light curve
shape, color, luminosity, line velocities, and host galaxy morphol-
ogy are hinting at some invariants in the explosions. Understand-
ing these parameters gives us a chance to learn more about the
explosions and strengthen our con dence in the distances.
