Gravitational lensing studies of
high resolution cluster simulations

In our ongoing work, we use the highest resolution cluster simu-
lations available to study weak and strong gravitational lensing.
These simulations performed by Springel and White have a soft-
ening length of 0.7kpc/h and a particle mass of 4.6810 7 solar
masses.
A cluster acting as a gravitational lens distorts the number density
and shapes of background galaxies, and can also create multiple
images. Synthetic data sets which mimic the action of such a
cluster as a lens can be created.
Questions that are addressed include the accuracy with which sub-
structure on various scales can be recovered using lensing recon-
struction techniques. This is very important in determining the
power of lensing in studying the evolution of substructure as a
function of cluster redshift.
