Evolution of Galaxy Clustering

Galaxy clustering is a fundamental statistic whose redshift depen-
dence tests the cosmological world model, the density uctuation
spectrum and the statistical theory of galaxy formation. Below
redshift one the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology
eld galaxy survey nds a slow decline of clustering with increas-
ing redshift, most consistent with biasing models in a low density
at CDM universe. The density and clustering of these galaxies
is insuфcient to cause the substantial galaxy merging that builds
up the mass of the galaxies. In this intermediate redshift sample
the red galaxies are a factor of about ve more clustered than the
blue galaxies. Beyond redshift one the available samples have a
less clear relation to the low redshift galaxies. The Lyman Break
galaxies around redshift three have a correlation amplitude not
greatly evolved from low redshift galaxies. The extremely red
galaxies beyond redshift one found in the Las Campanas Infrared
Survey are more clustered yet than the lower redshift normal red
galaxies. This suggesting that they are a strongly merging popu-
lation which may be related to other strongly star forming popu-
lations beyond redshift one. Overall the results are in qualitative
accord with biased clustering in a low density universe.
