"Weighing black-holes with the Australian Dark Energy Survey"

Observations over the last decade indicate black-holes likely resided at the heart of most if not all galaxies. The correlation between the masses of these compact nuclear sources and their host galaxy is poorly understood and likely plays an important role in the formation and evolution, of at least the most massive systems, due to AGN feedback. However, an accurate measurement of individual black-hole mass for even the most massive systems has proven challenging beyond local galaxy groups due to the small angular size of the sphere of influence of such systems. As part of the OzDES spectroscopic campaign to follow-up sources from the Dark Energy Survey we are undertaking a Reverberation Mapping program observing 1,000 AGN. The measured reverberation lag-times will allow black-hole mass estimates for a large sample of AGN across a wide range in intrinsic luminosity and cosmological distances. These results will be used to calibrate AGN as a new standard candle for cosmology. I will give a brief summary of the reverberation mapping technique and describe the important role SkyMapper photometry can play in this program.
