Ziggy Telescope Simulator

The Ziggy Automatic Spectrum Telescope

This wonderful instrument has now been installed outside the USS Drongo. If you type in any coordinates, it will point at that location, and take a picture. It will automatically identify any fuzzballs in this picture. It will then randomly select one of these fuzzballs, and get a spectrum of it. Finally, the software will measure the wavelength of the Hydrogen H-alpha absorption line in this spectrum. On Earth, and in your lab in the USS Drongo, this line always occurs at a wavelength of 656.3 nanometres (nm).

Pick any region on the sky. You should specify the coordinates on the sky (Right Ascension and Declination). Only objects with declinations between 0 and 90 will be visible. A declination of 90 will find you a fuzzball directly overhead. Lower angles will find you fuzzballs nearer the horizon. Right ascension should be between 0 and 360 degrees, and tells you how far around the sky to find a fuzzball.

Once you pick a region, press the "find and measure" button and your automatic telescope will search for a fuzzball near these coordinates. Once it identifies one, it will measure how many photons per second are detected from this particular fuzzball, as well as measuring the spectrum.

It will then print out this wavelength and the number of photons per second detected.

If you hit the "find and measure" button repeatedly at the same coordinates, the telescope will keep on finding new fuzzballs near this position. You can use this automatic telescope as many times as you want.
