HII Regions in Galaxies

These are composite images of narrow band H-Alpha (RED) and red continuum (GREEN and BLUE) obtained with the 1.0m telescope @ Siding Spring by Ryder and Dopita.

SNR 0102-72.3 in the SMC

HST PC Image in [O III] compared with ground-based image (2.3m telescope @ Siding Spring).

FTP this image?- 214 Kb

Ground-Based Image in [O III] and H-Alpha (green and red) (2.3m telescope @ Siding Spring).

Note the oxygen-rich filaments, the dark halo between the reverse shock defined by these filaments and the blast wave-front. The faint high-excitation photoionised outer halo in the ISM is also visible as greenish gas outside the blast-wave.

SNR N132D in the LMC

HST PC Image in [O III] (green), [O II] (blue) and [S II] (red)

Note how the oxygen-rich ejecta is distinguished from the cloudlets of "normal" composition.

NGC 2992

Cerro Tololo Image in stellar continuum (blue + green) and H-Alpha +[NII] (red)

Note the neat biconical outflow in this Seyfert Galaxy. Anaysis has shown that ~100 Msun/year is streaming out at 500km/s..
