I am an astronomer, because I love stars, galaxies, and the Universe. I might be rather a theorist, I am making my own galaxies in my computer based on physics and compareing with the observed galaxies in the real Universe, in order to investigate how galaxies form and evolve. Especially, I am simulating the formation and chemodynamical evolution of galaxies. "Chemical" evolution means the evolution of elemental abundances in the galaxy, which relates stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, and supernovae. "Dynamical" evolution means the structure evolution of the system that consists of gas, stars and dark matter, which is controlled by gravity and hydrodynamics. Some of physical processes are unkown, and thus galaxies are mysterious. After the PhD at the Univ. of Tokyo, Japan, in Apr. 2002, I worked at the Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics (MPA) in Munich, Germany, for three and a half years. It was my first experience of living abroad. I faced a lot of difficulties caused by "differences" and found a lot of interests to appreciate the world. Then I moved back to my home town, Tokyo, worked at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) for two and a half years. The life in Japan is easy, comfortable, and peaceful to me, but sometimes I miss the abundant European life and friends that I could finally find after my long efforts with tears. From Apr. 2008, I've unexpecectedly moved abroad again! since I got a position at the Australian National University. Now I am living in Canberra, Australia, my life is getting wilder and wilder... I always miss the concrete jungle, but I am happy with reserching here. I decide to accept.
The background picture of the top page is TATAMI, which is a Japanese carpet, made from rush. I'm proud of Japanese culture and would like to introduce it. I appreciate the variety of cultures in the world and respect all of them. I hate war, even if it has any reason, even after Sep.2001 terrorism. Japan is the only country that experienced atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of the WW II. However, we don't hate US that bombed twice to us. Instead, we have the ninth article of the Japanese Constitution, where we renounce any war and forces. That's what we learn from the bombs. First living abroad, I've found three walls. At the beginning, it was simply hard to me because everything was too different, namely, too slow, too unreliable, and too unkind. But when I tried to speak in German, even if it is just a single word, the first wall was broken. People suddenly turned to smile, and tried to help me. I understand that this is not only the case with German, but the way to survive abroad. (When in Rome, do as the Romans do.) Then I had a party at my flat, and could make good friends. They told me how to enjoy there, and I could break the second. (Friend -- a person whom one knows, likes, and trusts.) But still, sometimes, I felt a wall. In Australia, I would see what it is.
