NEW STONE METEORITE "CHELYABINSK"!!!

The fireball flew on February 15, 2013 at 09:22 (03:22 UTC) in Chelyabinsk region at supersonic speed and with bright flashes of light along the trajectory of the NEE-SWW(Chelyabinsk-Miass-Satka). Acoustic wave brought some minor damages in the form of broken glasses and some damages of old buildings. Lake Chebarkul, village Kuvashi (near Zlatoust), Zvyagino village are the probable locations of pieces of the falling bolide.

Update October 16, 2013

THE LARGEST FRAGMENT OF METEORITE CHELYABINSK PULLED FROM THE BOTTOM OF LAKE CHEBARKUL

October 16, 2013. The largest fragment of meteorite Chelyabinsk pulled from the bottom of Lake Chebarkul. Operation began early in the morning, October 16, 2013. Divers tore off a stone from an oozy bottom and on special cables by means of a tow pulled out it on a surface. The find surpassed all expectations: the meteorite appeared twice more, than expected. When a stone put on scales, they didn't sustain and broke. By approximate calculations, the weight of a space cobble-stone makes about 570 kilograms. Now it deliver to Chelyabinsk, and then will transfer to scientists for researches.

Meteorite Chelyabinsk: collecting substance, petrography, mineralogy and shock history.
Chelyabinsk meteorite belongs to the ordinary chondrites, which are 80% of the meteorites flux on Earth. One of its features is the minimum terrestrial contamination. According to the chemical composition, it belongs to LL with the metal content of about 1.5%. There are 2 types of material - light and dark. The light component is represented by the equilibrium chondrite of 5th petrologic type (LL5), subjected to a moderate shock metamorphism (S4) with multiple shock veins. The dark component belongs to impact melt breccias and consists of fragments of LL5, embedded in a matrix of the melt. It is chemically very similar to the light variety, although it differs in details.

O.P.Popova, V.V.Shuvalov, Yu.S.Rybnov, V.A.Harlamov (IDG RAS)
The first estimates of the physical parameters of the Chelyabinsk meteoroid.
The first estimates of Chelyabinsk meteoroid physical parameters are presented and comparison with other known events is carried out.

THE TYPE OF METEORITE "CHELYABINSK" IS DETERMINED: ORDINARY CHONDRITE LL5 (S4, W0)

Russian scientists of Vernadsky Institute analyse Chebarkul/Chelyabinsk Meteorite (Vesti.Ru)

Meteorite fall which produced numerous destructions in Chelyabinsk and its surroundings, is an ordinary chondrite of the type LL5 (S4, W0).

A slice (a cut) of one of meteorite samples. Here you can see round grains (chondrules) and cracks (veins) filled shock melt.

Slice of meteorite "Chelyabinsk" under the microscope. Polarized crossed light.

LL5 chondrites are 2% of falls among ordinary chondrites. The biggest LL5 meteorites are:

Knyahinya Ukraina 1866 500 kg
Paragould Arkansas, USA 1930 408 kg
Olivenza Spain 1924 150 kg

In Russia falls of such meteorites were not previously noted. We could assume that the event 15/Feb./2013 Chelyabinsk is the most grandiose falling of chondrite LL5.

Update February 21, 2013

THE FIRST COLLECTION OF METEORITE "CHELYABINSK" SAMPLES

Наша первая коллекция

Expedition of Meteorite Committee of Russian Academy of Sciences (KMET RAN) collected the first collection of a meteorite "Chelyabinsk".

На фото один из образцов. Черное на поверхности камня - кора плавления в атмосфере.

One of samples is shawn on a photo. The black surface of stone is melting crust, produced in atmosphere.

The preliminary analysis showed that the meteorite belongs to chemical type L or LL, petrologic type 5. The meteorite is probably non-uniform.

According to Cyril Lorenz, meteorite scientist of the Laboratory of Meteoritics, further study of the samples revealed thet meteor shower samples have different compositions (chondrite, breccia, impact melt). Thus meteorite is a shock melted breccia . To establish a ratio of components is the most interesting scientific task.

The sections of meteorite "Chelyabinsk". A shock melted breccia structure.

Since the composition of the meteorite fragments seen in the structure of the surface and the fusion crust, the ratio of the different components in the composition of the meteorite can be set by the large number of photos of different finds.

The Committee on Meteorites, resolving this important scientific task, asked any meteorite finders and owners to send the high quality photoes (possible anonymously) of their meteorite samples (with ruler scale) to address meteoritika@gmail.com or using online form http://chel-meteorit.youini.ru/

Update February 17, 2013

METEORITE "Chelyabinsk" WAS FOUND

Moscow, Feb. 17 - RIA News. Scientists discovered in the Lake Chebarkul fragments of the meteorite, which fell on Friday morning near Chelyabinsk. Their extraterrestrial nature of the chemical studies confirmed, Victor Grokhovsky, meteorite committee member of Russian Academy of Science, Ural Federal University, told their extraterrestrial nature were confirmed by the chemical studies .

TV Rossiya 24. Feb.18, 2013. Viktor Grokhovsky,Meteorite Commettee RAS: chemical analyses confirmed that peaces around pool in the Lake Chebarkul are chondrite, stone meteorite.

Grokhovsky said "We just finished a study. We confirm that the particles of matter (53 particles), found our expedition (UrFU) in the Lake Chebarkul do have a meteorite nature. This is a stone meteorite, an ordinary chondrite. We diagnosed all common chondritic minerals: the metallic iron, olivine, and sulfite and melted crust."

The content of metal particles is more than 8%, he said. Chemical analysis was carried out in the laboratory of University Research and Education Center "Nanotech", said Grokhovsky. The specialist added that for registration of a new meteor in the international catalogue more complete chemical analysis will be made. Meteorite will be called "Chebarkul" for the international catalogue"
