The issue

ScientistsworkingonthepolarizationoftheCosmicMicrowaveBackground(CMB)useaconventionforthe polarizationangle(PA)whichisoppositetotheIAUapprovedstandard.Thismaycauseconfusionand misunderstandings.
Background

TheconventionastronomersfollowforthePA(PolarizationAngle)goesbacktothe19thcenturyandithas beeninuseforobservationsgoingfromradiotogammarays:thePAincreasescounter-clockwisewhenlooking atthesource.ThisconventionisconsistentwiththeoneusedforthePositionAngleandithasbeenenforced bytheIAUwithaResolutionbyCommissions25and40attheIAUXVthGeneralAssemblyinSydneyin1973 (seeTransactionsoftheIAU,Vol.XVB,pg.166). Recently,thescientistsinvestigatingthepolarizationoftheCMB(theCMBpolarizationhasbeendiscoveredin 2002),haveunfortunatelyadoptedtheoppositeconvention(PAincreasingclockwisewhenlookingatthe source).ThiscorrespondstoachangeofsignoftheUStokesparameterandiscausingconfusionand misunderstandings,inparticularinthecaseofpolarizationdatacomingfromexperimentsandsatelliteswhich areusedbytheCMBcommunityandbyotherastronomers.
Recommendation

TheIAUrecommendsthatallastronomers,includingthoseworkingontheCMB,followtheIAUResolutionfor thePolarizationAngleinalltheirpublications.
