Ivan Puluj

Ivan Puluj was born on February 2nd, 1845 in the town of Hrymailiv. In
1864 he graduated from the Ternopil Gymnasium with honours. To continue his
education Ivan entered the Theological Department of the Vienna University
and after graduation from it he became a student of its Philosophy
Department. Having finished his studying Ivan Puluj started to investigate
physical processes and phenomena.
After receiving an Associate Professor Degree in Vienna, the scientist
had worked as a Professor of the German Prague polytechnic Institute over
30 years (from 1884 till 1916), then he was the Dean of Physical Faculty
and the Rector of this establishment. Puluj also worked as state adviser on
electrical engineering for Bohemian and Moravian local goverments.
Professor Puluj is well-known in scientific circles as a famous theorist
and experimenter, the author of many unique scientific papers, very
important inventions, the universally recognised expert in construction of
electric power stations, the highly qualified specialist in ancient
languages place of X-ray's origin. He made the first X-ray photographs.
In his researches Puluj was very close to the discovery of his
experiments with X-rays were made by him, using vacuum tubes of his own
design. He was nevertheless among the first who worked with X-rays and used
them for medical diagnostics.
His attention is also focused on the problems of molecular physics,
studying the cathode rays properties and nature. He published dozens of
articles and booklets, more than 50 scientific papers.
Ivan Puluj is a brilliant translator of the Bible in original, a Psalter
and prayer book. He is also famous for his active attitude towards
protecting of rights of the Ukrainian people, their political freedoms and
native language, for his great organizational, cultural and educational
work. The scientist created a fund of helping poor Ukrainian students who
studied abroad; he assisted to solve the problems of Ukrainian refugees
during World War I.
The great scientist, cultural and public figure Ivan Puluj died on
January 31st, 1918 in Prague where he was buried.
His inventions and scientific papers are a great pride for the world
science. Nowadays his name occupies one of the first places in the list of
outstanding figures of Ukrainian culture. Celebrating the 150th anniversary
of Puluj birth-day, many events devoted to this memorable date were held in
Ternopil, Hrymailiv, Lviv and Kyiv.
In honor of Ivan Puluj named streets in many cities of Ukraine. National
Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Award Ivan Puluj, awarded for outstanding
work in the field of applied physics. The name Ivan Puluj awarded Ternopil
National Technical University.
Ivan Puluj's name will always remain in our hearts as the symbol of the
intellectual wealth of Ukrainian people, landmark of the future
achievements of our state.
