Glossary Astronomical Unit (AU): middle distance between Earth and Sun, equal 149.6 millions km. Eccentricity: a parameter that specifies the shape of a conic section; one of the standard elements used to describe an elliptic orbit. Mean Distance: the semimajor axis of an elliptic orbit. Opposition: a configuration of the Sun, Earth and a planet in which the apparent geocentric longitude of the planet differs by 180° from the apparent geocentric longitude of the Sun. Semimajor Axis: half the length of the major axis of an ellipse; a standard element used to describe an elliptical orbit. |
Note:
All time moments are given in Universal Time (UT) units. |
