PST at Edwards Air Force Base, California · Mission Highlights: NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) jointly sponsored this mission, commonly called Spacelab 1. The mission's prime objective was to verify the capability of the Spacelab system and its performance. In total the crew completed 73 scientific experiments. There were a number of firsts during this flight: the first flight of the Spacelab, the first flight of an ESA astronaut on board on a Shuttle, the first time six persons entered space in one vehicle, and the first operational use of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System.
