Fig. 1. An example of the EUV chain revealed by the modified SOHO/EIT images.
A complex EUV (195 A) chain or thread of December 16, 1997, consisting of several quasi-straight-line fragments between points 1-2-3-4-5 and covering a large part of the solar disk.
Fig. 2. A comparison of the large-scale chains and threads on two pairs of the modified SOHO/EIT (195 A; inverted) and He I (10830 A; normal) images.
-- There are a number of coinciding large-scale chains and threads on two EUV images (a) and (c): in particular, the most impressive chain 1-2-3-4-5 (or perhaps 1-2-3-4-6) as well as the high-latitude southern chain 6-7 and the near-the-west-limb chain 8-9.
-- Some coinciding and analogous fragments of these EUV chains and other structures can be distinguished also under an attentive comparison of the SOHO/EIT images (a) and (c) with the corresponding He I images (b) and (d): see, for example, the fragments 2-3-4-6 and 8-9.
-- Two He I images from the different observatories Kitt Peak and MLSO/HAO display also many other coinciding chains and threads in spite of the 4-hour time interval.
Modified SOHO/EIT (195 A) and MLSO/HAO He I (10830 A) movies showing development of a complicated system of large-scale coinciding chains and threads in this event
