Compact Combined Autonomous Time and Frequency Standard

S. D. Petrov, S. S. Smirnov, I. V. Chekunov, D. K. Hegay
Abstract:
The global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) such as GLONASS and GPS have easily solved problems of synchronization and time determination with an accuracy of a few dozen nanoseconds. Nevertheless, the use of GNSS systems revealed low reliability of GNSS-synchronization when they are influenced by electronic warfare activities. Thus, GPS system originally includes its own electronic warfare facilities such as S/A (Selective availability) and A-S (anti-spoofing). GLONASS system does not have any own electronic warfare facilities, but (the same as GPS) it is vulnerable to the third parties electronic warfare systems anyway, because its radio signal is weak.
Consequently, storing the reference time and frequency autonomously in field conditions is remaining to be a problematic task. A variant of a compact autonomous time and frequency standard is proposed in this work. This standard is based on three primary time and frequency standards and includes a program system which analyses and predicts the time scale. Also, an analysis and combination algorithm for primary clocks is developed. It takes into account a shift and linear drift of frequency, temperature variations and structure functions of each generator. A prototype combined time and frequency standard has been worked out. Analysis results are demonstrated where the combined time scale is compared with external signals such as GPS and GLONASS time scale
