The technology of ionic implantation appeared in 60-s and was extencively applied in microelectronics and semiconductor technologies mainly for the creation of doped surface layers with definite conductivity. In these methods of ionic implantation the high energies of ion and low ionic fluxes are emplyed. Later the technologies were developed combining the thermal treatment of a material with ionic impantation from glue discharge. This method allows one to produce the surface layers with a high concentration of alloyng element (like nitrogen) with a thickness up to several tens of microns. These materials with alloyed layers can be used in machinery, car and aviation industry. Recently, we developed a novel Hall current accelerator which can be used for the low-voltage ionic implantation. This accelerator combines the relative low ionic energies (0.1. to 10 keV) with high dencities of ionic flux (up to 1–3 mA/cm2). Large aperture (up to 1400 mm) allows one the treatment of the large-area substrates. The ionic nitriding of austenitic stainless steel and ferritic low-carbon steel has been studied. The influence of ionic current, energy of ions and implantation time are determined. The depth profiles measured with the aid of secondary-ion mass spectroscopy are presented. The hardness after ionic nitriding is characterized. The anomally quick penetration of nitrogen penetration in the austenitic stainless steel having the dencely packed face centered cubic (fcc) latice is observed. The ideas about subplantion of ions and radiation-enhanced diffusion of nitrogen atoms into the substrate are used for the explanation of this effect. The possible influence of the grain boundary phase transitions leading the the formation of the metasable base centered cubic phase with high duffusion permeabilty at the grain boundaries in the fcc-iron is also discussed.
