The main points for formation of the teams

  • The Olympiad participants are not supposed to study at any institutions of higher education (university or school which can be considered technical colleges). Students who finished their school examination cannot be members of a team.
  • Only students did not participated at the IAO or APAO of the current educating year may participate in SiberiaOpen (that is, during an educating year - since autumn till spring - a student may participate in IAO or in APAO or in "Siberia Open", not in any two of these Olympiads). This restriction should stimulate "wide" astronomy teaching in the world, the general policy of the International Astronomy Olympiads is for participation of more students in the Olympiads rather than for many times participation of the same students.
  • The groups of participants to be the following:
    • m - those who finish school later than in 3 years;
    • a - those who finish school later than in 2 years;
    • b - those who finish school next year (or, it is possible, later);
    • g - those who finish school during the current year (or, it is possible, later).
  • The age of any student should not reach 21.00 in the year of the Olympiad holding (i.e. born in year YYYY-20 or later). This point gives a possibility to participate in an international astronomy event for many students who are older than the age limit for IAO and APAO.
  • Participants of all the groups must at least 14.00 years old on December 31 of the finished year (i.e. born not later than in year YYYY-15).
  • Some reasonable exceptions may be done by the IAO Chairman for actual requests from team leaders.
  • National representation quota at SiberiaOpen is (up to) 8 students and 2 team leaders (the same number as at the Asian-Pacific Astronomy Olympiad). It is recommended 2 particiants for every group. Observers are welcome as well.
  • In the case of absence of a National team from a country, the regions, cities and towns or individuals of this country are responsible (by a permission) to take part in "Siberia Open".

National Astronomy Olympic Committees and interested organizations are welcome to ask more about "SiberiaOpen".

        "Siberia Open" proposed to emphasize the scientific approach to the problems (the approach that is quite difficult to realise). The main aim of the Olympiad is not to check formal facts and formal knowledge, but to stimulate the logic, imagination and creativity of students:

        • the character of the problems have to put the students in non-standard situations, very close to those of a real scientific research;
        • the students will need to create hypotheses, assume approximations, choose between a multitude of factors that could be taken into account or neglected, and make own independent decision about the form of the needed answers;
        • the tasks can set unusual problems for whose solving a free way of thinking, fantasy and inventiveness are necessary;
        • the tasks allow a variety of completely different, although correct solutions applying different original approaches.
