VIII International Astronomy Olympiad
Stockholm, Sweden, October 2/3 - 8, 2003.
The following information before the Olympiad was
possible for the proposed participants and other astronomy amateurs
interested in VIII IAO
Brief information - announcement.
Attention. Dates of the
Olympiad changed! Due to request of the Local Organizing
Committee (lack of time and problems with finances) the dates
will be: October (2)3 - 8, 2003. The deadlines mentined below
did not changed.
The 8th International Astronomy Olympiad will be held
in the first decade of October 2003.
IAO-2003 hosting.
Official languages of the Olympiad - English and Russian.
Problems will be prepared by the Organizing Committee in
these two languages and the team leaders are responsible to
translate tasks to native languages of participants just before
the rounds (three hours before). Character of the problems to
solve were analogous to ones of the previous International
Astronomy Olympiads (1996-2002).
Applications
Applications should be done in advance (not later than 9 weeks
before the initially postulated date of the Olympiad starting, i.e.
not later July 20 for the IAO-2003) for
the Olympic Coordinating Council.
Applications includes personal data of proposed team leaders
and participants. The list of the personal data is analogous to
one of the previous year's
Olympiad.
As an obligatory preparing for the application a short report of
National Olympiad of the current year with a set of all problems used
on the Olympiad have to be presented by the applicating team
(Supplement Instructions).
The report with texts of all problems used during all-national stages
(including ones during the possible preparing camps) of the National
Olympiad should be done in one of the official languages of the
Olympiad (Russian or English). The final minutes (protocols written
in Latin or Cyrillic) of the Olympiad (evaluating of solutions of
the students participated in the last stage of the Olympiad) should
be included as well. The report have to be presented before the
application to participate in IAO.
Deadlines
The official deadline for receiving the
applications from states:
July 20, 2003, 24 h of Swedish time (22 h UT) (63 days before
the Olympiad starting according initially determined dates).
The period for for receiving the applications from
regions, cities and towns (in the case of absence of National
team from the state - absence of official valid application):
July 21 - August 31, 2003, 24 h of Swedish time (22 h UT)
(63 - 21 days before the Olympiad starting according initially
determined dates).
The period for for receiving the applications from
individuals (in the case of absence of neither National team from
the states nor teams from regions, cities and towns):
September 1 - 7, 2003, 24 h of Swedish time (22 h UT)
(21 - 14 days before the Olympiad starting according initially
determined dates).
The official deadline for receiving by LOC
all personal data of proposed
participants and leaders for asking valid for Swedish
Consulates invitations (i.e. invitations for visas):
Not defined yet, but last year the analogous deadline was
56 days before the Olympiad starting.
Teams formation
Authorized National Representative Astronomy Organizations
(ANRAO) of the participating countries are authorized to form
the teams of the Olympiad member-states.
The age limits for the groups are defined as (p. 4.5. of the
Statutes):
younger group: not older than 15.00 years old on March 01,
year of the Olympiad (i.e. born after March 01 1988);
senior group: not older than 17.00 years old on September 01,
year of the Olympiad (i.e. born after September 01 1986).
The last Form educating student may participate only in the
senior group.
The Olympiad participants are not supposed to study at any
institutions of higher education.
National team for the states with
the registered ANRAO organizing their own National
Astronomy Olympiads (and presented in time reports about
National Astronomy Olympiad 2003), maximal:
3 participants in the younger group.
2 participants in the senior group.
prizewinners (I-st or II-nd prize) of the previous IAO not older
than the age limit who did not used such a possibility before.
2 team leaders (specialists in astronomy or astronomy
education).
not more than 1 observer (specialist in astronomy or
astronomy education).
Other types of arriving persons are not possible.
National team for other states (the states
without the registered ANRAO or not organizing their own
National Astronomy Olympiads or not presented in time reports about
National Astronomy Olympiad 2003), maximal:
2 participants in the younger group.
1 participant in the elder group.
prizewinners (I-st or II-nd prize) of the previous IAO not older
than the age limit who did not used such a possibility before.
1 team leader (specialist in astronomy or astronomy education).
not more than 1 observer (specialist in astronomy or
astronomy education).
Other types of arriving persons are not possible.
Important notes for interested participants
For the initial period of the International Astronomy Olympiad
(1996-2005) in order to popularization the Olympiad the Statutes of
the Olympiad allow:
1. In the case of absence
of a National team from a state, the regions, cities and towns
or individuals of this state are responsible (by a permission of
the Olympic Coordinating Council)
to take part in the Olympiad.
Team of region, city, town (maximal):
2 participants in the younger group.
1 participant in the senior group.
prizewinners (I-st or II-nd prize) of the previous IAO not older
than the age limit who did not used such a possibility before.
1 team leader (specialist in astronomy or astronomy education).
not more than 1 observer (specialist in astronomy or
astronomy education).
Other types of arriving persons are not possible.
Total numbers of participants and team leaders from a state
should not exceed the numbers of national representation.
- 2. For the states, starting their activity in the
Olympiad the age limits for the groups are defined as:
For the Olympiads 2000-2003:
younger group: not older than 15.00 years old on January 01,
year of the Olympiad (i.e. for 2003 born after January 01, 1988);
older group: not older than 17.00 years old on January 01,
year of the Olympiad (i.e. for 2003 born after January 01, 1986).

For the Olympiad 2003 all the states as a rule may be considered
as states, starting their activity.
IAO-2003 host
There were two valid applications for IAO-2003 hosting.
Having heard the report of the Chairman of the Coordinating
Council of the International Astronomy Olympiad about these
two possibilities the Euro-Asian Astronomical Society Board
gives a card-blanche to Local Organizing Committee of Sweden
for realization the VIII IAO at the end of September, 2003 in
Stockholm. Initially proposal dates of the Olympiad were
September 22-29.

The place of lodging for the teams will be Vandrarhem Zinkensdamm (a hostel at

Currency in Sweden
The currency in Sweden is "Swedish Crown" ("Krona" in Swedish) which is divided
in 100 oere. The abbreviation for krona is kr, and the code is SEK. Banknotes
in circulation are 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 kr. Coins in circulation are 50 oere, 1 kr,
5 kr and 10 kr. At the Web-page of Currency Exchange Deluxe you can see the the current exchange
rates between more than 60 currencies and the Swedish Crown. Approximate rate
of Swedish Crown is: 9 SEK = 1 EURO, 0.26 SEK = 1 RUR, 7.8 SEK = 1 US$.

Information about the International Astronomy Olympiad 2004
will be known in the late 2003.
