The following information before the Olympiad was possible for the proposed participants and other astronomy amateurs interested in VII IAO


Brief information - announcement.


[Image of BTA, winter]The 7th International Astronomy Olympiad will be held on October 22-29, 2002 at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) in North Caucasus. The dates are about the same as two years ago when the V IAO took place.

Official languages of the Olympiad are Russian and English. Problems will be prepared by the Organizing Committee in these two languages and the leaders are responsible to translate tasks to native languages of participants just before the rounds (three hours before). Character of the problems to solve will be analogous to ones of the previous International Astronomy Olympiads (1996-2001).

Authorized National Representative Astronomy Organizations (ANRAO) of the participating countries are authorized to form the teams of the Olympiad member-states.

The age limits for the groups are defined as (p. 4.5. of the Statutes):

  • younger group: not older than 15.00 years old on March 01, year of the Olympiad (i.e. born after March 01 1987);
  • older group: not older than 17.00 years old on September 01, year of the Olympiad (i.e. born after September 01 1985).

    VII IAO    National representativity

    National team for the states with ANRAO organizing their own National Astronomy Olympiads (max):
  • 3 participants in the younger group.
  • 2 participants in the elder group.
  • prizewinners (I-st or II-nd prize) of the IAO-2001 not older than the age limit.
    The Olympiad participants are not supposed to study at any institutions of higher education.
  • 2 team leaders (specialists in astronomy or astronomy education).

    VII IAO    Important notes for interested participants

    For the initial period of the International Astronomy Olympiad (1996-2005) in order to popularization the Olympiad the Statutes of the Olympiad allow:

    1. In the case of absence of a National team from a state, the regions, cities and towns or individuals of this state are responsible (by a permission of the Olympic Coordinating Council) to take part in the Olympiad. (The permission may be done after the official deadline for the applications from the states: nine weeks before the Olympiad starting.)

    Team of region, city, town (max):
      2 participants in the younger group.
      1 participant in the elder group.
      prizewinners (I-st or II-nd prize) of the IAO-2001 not older than the age limit.
      The Olympiad participants are not supposed to study at any institutions of higher education.
      1 team leader (specialist in astronomy or astronomy education).
    Total numbers of participants and team leaders from a state should not exceed the numbers of national representativity.
    2. For the states, starting their activity in the Olympiad the age limits for the groups are defined as:
      For the Olympiads 2000-2002:
        younger group: not older than 15.00 years old on January 01, year of the Olympiad (i.e. born after January 01, 1987);
        older group: not older than 17.00 years old on January 01, year of the Olympiad (i.e. born after January 01 1985).

    For the Olympiad 2002 all the states as a rule (except CIS states) are considered as states, starting their activity.

    VII IAO    Deadlines
    • The official deadline for receiving the applications from states:
      August 19, 2002, 24 h of Moscow time (20 h UT) (63 days before the Olympiad starting).
    • The period for for receiving the applications from regions, cities and towns (in the case of absence of National team from the state):
      August 20 - September 30, 2002, 24 h of Moscow time (20 h UT) (63 - 21 days before the Olympiad starting).
    • The period for for receiving the applications from individuals (in the case of absence of neither National team from the staten nor teams from regions, cities and towns):
      October 1 - 7, 2002, 24 h of Moscow time (20 h UT) (21 - 14 days before the Olympiad starting).
    • The official deadline for receiving by LOC all personal data of proposed participants and leaders for asking valid for Russian Consulates invitations (i.e. invitations for visas):
      August 26, 2001, 24 h of Moscow time (20 h UT) (56 days before the Olympiad starting).
    • Note 1: It takes about a month for issuing official invitations for Russian visas.
    • Note 2: No problem if a team will use other way to get visas (i.e. not through invitations organized by the LOC), but it necessary to inform LOC about this way. Not all Russian visas give permission to visit Karachaevo-Cherkessian republic.

    VII IAO    Invitations and visas

    Those who are interested to get further information about the Olympiad (*) are welcome to contact Coordinating Council in English or Russian.

      (*) Including official invitations for teams and observers. Take into account: Russian visa and visa support are necessary for citizens of some countries! Ukrainian or Belorussian transit visa sometimes also necessary if one plan to use train from European states! See Deadlines.
    The Olympic Coordinating Council will be glad to receive your proposals.

    VIII IAO    International Astronomy Olympiad 2003

    Information about the International Astronomy Olympiad 2003 will be known in the late 2002. The Olympic Coordinating Council will be glad to receive your proposals. According to Statutes on the Olympiad Autorized National Representative (Astronomical) Organizations may send applications for IAO-2003 hosting not later December 22, 2002.
