IX International Astronomy Olympiad
Simeiz, Crimea, October 1-9, 2004.

Brief information - announcement

[Dome of the 400-mm astrograph] The 9th International Astronomy Olympiad will be held on October 1-9, 2004. The dates are about the same as three and five years ago when the VI IAO and IV IAO took place in Crimea. Place of the Olympiad to be different from one in 1999 and 2001. Arrival, first night (and previous 1-2 nights if necessary for some teams), opening ceremony will be in the capital of Crimea, town of Simferopol'. After the lunch on October 2 the teams to be delivered to the main place of the Olympiad - South Coast of Crimea (about 105 km from Simferopol'). The duration of the Olympiad to be one day longer than usual. Day of the official departure is October 9. Some additional programme on October 9-11 may be organized (like in 2001) for some teams. The programme of these days may be discussed with every team individually.

Observers are welcome to the Olympiad!

Official languages of the Olympiad - English and Russian. Problems will be prepared by the Organizing Committee in these two languages and the leaders are responsible to translate tasks to native languages of participants just before the rounds (three hours before). Character of the problems to solve were analogous to ones of the previous International Astronomy Olympiads (1996-2003).

Formation of the teams

One may find the rules of teams forming in the Acting Statutes/Regulations of the International Astronomy Olympiad and the Supplementary Instructions N 3.

Applications

As an obligatory preparing for the application a short report of National Olympiad of the current year with a set of all problems used on the Olympiad has to be presented by the applicating team (see the form and examples for the report in the Supplementary Instructions N 10). The report with texts of all problems used during all-national stages (including ones during the possible preparing camps) of the National Olympiad should be done in one of the official languages of the Olympiad (Russian or English). The final minutes (protocols written in Latin or Cyrillic) of the Olympiad (evaluating of solutions of the students participated in the last stage of the Olympiad) should be included as well. Necessary actual points of the report will be announced later. It is desirable that the report to be presented 5 weeks before the application to participate in IAO, but at least it must be presented 2 weeks before the application.

  • E-mail for sending the reports.

Applications should be done in advance (not later than 10 weeks before the Olympiad, i.e. not later middle of July for the IAO-2004) for the Olympic Coordinating Council. Translation to the national language of participants of the Rules and Regulations for a participant of the Olympiad should be included to the application as well.

    IAO-2004 host and dates

The dates are about the same as three and five years ago when the VI IAO and IV IAO took place in Crimea. Town of the Olympiad to be different from one in 1999 and 2001.

    Deadlines

The main feature and difference for the IX IAO is seriously longer period of issuing invitations for visas to Crimea. The department of visas of Crimea may give obligation to issue invitation only within 3 months. As usual invitations are issued shorter (within 2 months) but the department gives no any warranty for periods shorter 3 months. So:

  • The recommended deadline for receiving by LOC all personal data of proposed participants and leaders (maybe with some extra persons for reserve) for asking valid for Ukrainian Consulates invitations (i.e. invitations for visas):
    June 15, 2004.
May be it is the most serious problem in preparing documents for IX IAO.
And it will be quite senselessly for the teams to send the personal data of participants and leaders for asking valid for Ukrainian Consulates invitations (i.e. invitations for visas) later than:
    July 15, 2004.
  • E-mails for sending these data. Please, use all three e-mails.
  • Note 1: A team may use other way to get visas (i.e. not through invitations of the department of visas of Crimea organized by the LOC), but it necessary to inform LOC about this way in advance and take permission from LOC.
  • Note 2: LOC may send various types of invitations issued by organizations involved into IAO-2004 organization. As usual these invitations are not official for asking visas in Ukrainian Consulates, but in some cases it maybe helpful. The faxes with such inofficial invitations may be sent directly to the Consulates as well.
  • Note 3: For the case a team is late to send the data in time: LOC recommends to use touristic companies in your country to obtaine touristic visas to Ukraine. The faxes with inofficial invitations may be sent directly to the touristic company (to the company you choose) as well.
  • Note 4: LOC cannot adopt team of a state with official passports without visas if visas are necessary for the citizens of the state with usual passports.

  • The official deadline for receiving the short report of National Olympiad of the current year with a set of all problems used on the National Olympiad:
    July 8, 2004, 24 h of Crimean time (21 h UT) (84 days before the Olympiad starting).
  • E-mail for sending the reports.

  • The official deadline for receiving the applications from states:
    July 22, 2004, 24 h of Crimean time (21 h UT) (70 days before the Olympiad starting).
  • E-mail for sending applications.

    Financial obligations

Financial obligations of the participating states (i.e. fees) to be announced later. The Olympiad is organized in accordance with the #9.2.Note 1. of the Acting Statutes/Regulations of the International Astronomy Olympiad (the case of absence other candidates-organizers for the IAO in some year...).
