One of the
prominent scientists of the 20th century Gamow was born in Odessa on March 4, 1904 in the
family of a secondary school teacher. In 1921 Gamow entered the Novorossijskij (Odessa) University and worked in Odessa Astronomical Observatory. In 1923 Gamow continued his studies in the University of Petrograd (St. Petersburg). His further scientific work was done in the institutions of Leningrad, Goettingen, Copenhagen, Cambridge (UK) and the USA. Main scientific achievements of G.Gamow include the creation of alpha and beta-decay theory and the theory of exploding Universe. Gamow was the first to decipher a genetic code. Through his brilliant popular lectures, books and articles he promoted public interest to science. In 1956 he received the Calling Prize awarded by UNESCO for science popularization. George Gamow had the true Odessa temperament, his scientific ingenuity and cheerful humor were inexhaustible. His life was full of legends. The memory of Gamow lives among the people who worked together with him and everybody who is imbued with beauty and elegance of Gamow's findings. In 1994, in the year of his 90-th anniversary, an International Conference "Astrophysics and cosmology after Gamow" was held in Odessa and St.Petersburg. The idea of this conference is supported by the UNESCO representation in Russia and by the International Renaissance Foundation (Odessa branch) (affiliation of the Soros Foundation). |

SCIENCE CONTRIBUTIONS
The SOC is actively working on the program. The scientific program of the meeting will consist of invited reviews that are of general interest, oral, and poster contributions. The program is being structured so as to include morning joint plenary sessions, and separate afternoon sections, which cover the following topics:
GAMOW MEMORIAL SESSION (Conv. Prof. A.Chernin, Co-Conv. Dr. I.Pustylnik)
ASTROPHYSICS
- Quasars and Active Galactic Nuclei (Conv. Prof. A.Chernin)
- Interstellar medium, Supernovae, Stellar winds and
Supershells in galaxies (Conv. Prof. N.Bochkarev,
Co-conv. Dr. S.Silich)
- Stars and Stellar atmospheres (Conv. Prof. A.Cherepashchuk,
Co-conv. Prof. N.Komarov).
- Solar Maximum Year (Conv. Prof. V.Obridko)
COSMOLOGY
- Physics of the Early Universe (Conv. Prof. A.Starobinsky)
- Modern Modified Theories of Gravitation and Cosmology
(Conv. Prof. V.Melnikov)
- Large Scale Structure of the Universe (Conv. Prof. V.Lukash)
- Quantum Gravity and Quantum Cosmology (Conv. Prof. A.Barvinsky)GAMOVIANA
The SOC and LOC of GMIC-99 Meeting plan also to convene a special memorial session tentatively entitled "The Universe of G.Gamow". During the session the historical background and the contemporary state should be summarized by invited lecturers in the fields of investigation where G.Gamow's own impact on modern astrophysics was the most remarkable: i)discovery of cosmic microwave background (CMB), ii) nucleocosmochronology, iii) tunnel effect and nuclear barrier penetration, iiii) neutrinos, URCA processes and supernovae. These will be alternated with the topics - G.Gamow as an artist, as a popular writer plus his innumerable jokes and buffoonery in an attempt to introduce to the audience, notably the young scientists, the world of George Gamow and to understand the impact of this magnetic personality on his contemporaries.
