Abstract Interrelations between characteristics of geomagnetic activity and parameters of the solar wind are investigated. Daily values of the corresponding indices for years 1966-2001 are used for the analysis. Relatively simple relations that link variations of geomagnetic activity and solar wind parameters are found. The obtained models allow quantitative estimation of influence of the solar wind parameters upon geomagnetic activity. Such an approach essentially simplifies both physical interpretation of the models and their comparing with known relations.
