ESO - Phase 3 Policies for ESO Spectroscopic Public Surveys

Phase 3 Policies for ESO Spectroscopic Public Surveys

Following from the agreement signed by the ESO Director General and the PIs of the VISTA public surveys, the delivery of the data products to the ESO archive from an ESO Public Survey is the responsibility of the PI, which certifies the scientific quality and accuracy of the data products.

Survey products will be delivered to the ESO archive in a format specified in Sect. 4 of the ESO Science Data Products standard [PDF], which is accessible from the top-level Phase 3 web page. Please be aware of the improvement and changes on the data interface associated with the Phase 3 upgrade; more information available at these web pages:
http://www.eso.org/sci/observing/phase3/upgrade_summary.html
and
http://www.eso.org/sci/observing/phase3/faq.html

The Phase 3 submission for the data products from spectroscopic public surveys will be opened on July 15th, 2016. The upload of the data products should be completed by August 15th, 2016, after which the data will be validated for agreement with the data standards and content, then archived and published via the ESO SAF, for access by the astronomical community.

According to the general Phase 3 policy for ESO public surveys, the Call for Phase 3 submission in 2016 is managed as follow:

  • For the submission #3, the PIs of the public spectroscopic surveys Gaia ESO and PESSTO are invited to submit the data products based on observations that were completed before the reference date of June 1st, 2015, i.e. six months before the opening of the Phase 3 call.
The required data products are 1D spectra and catalogues of the physical parameters, including spectral variability curves from multi-epoch observations, as detailed in the approved Survey Management plans, with the possibility of submitting complementary data products as specified in the Table below.

  • For the submission #1 of the VIMOS public spectroscopic surveys, the PIs of VANDELS and LEGA-C are invited to submit the data products based on observations that were completed before the reference date of June 1st, 2015, i.e. six months before the opening of the current Phase 3 call. The mandatory data products are 1D spectra (one-dimensional and two-dimensional wavelength and flux calibrated spectra; single OB 1D spectra as well as co-added spectra are to be released for LEGA-C; 1D and 2D spectra from sub-sets of 20 hours of on-source integration for VANDELS); catalogues of the physical parameters are complementary for this first submission. Description of 1D spectra products to be submitted are specified in the approved Survey Management plans, and included in the Table below.
