The Mass of Galaxies at Low and High Redshift

An ESO Workshop co-organized with the UniversitУ?ts-Sternwarte MУМnchen

Venice (Italy), October 24-26, 2001

Determining the mass of galaxies as a function of redshift is perhaps one of the most challenging, open issues in current astronomical research, one with deep connections to cosmology. For this reason, ESO and the UniversitУ?ts-Sternwarte MУМnchen are jointly organizing a 3-day workshop on "The Mass of Galaxies at Low and High Redshift".

The program will start with a review of current techniques to measure the baryonic (stellar) and total mass of nearby galaxies, and will soon focus on current attempts and future perspectives at measuring these quantities at higher and higher redshifts, along with their implications for galaxy formation and evolution.

The workshop will be hosted by the Venice International University, singularly located on an island in sight of Venice downtown, and will take place on October 24-26, 2001.
