(1) Planets and Star Formation

Understanding the diversity and consequences of star and planet formation is a key area of research for ESO. The processes by which stars and their companion are born have profound implications for the possibility and nature of life in the universe. Current topics at ESO span the range from low- to high-mass star formation, detection and characterization of extrasolar planets, and the theoretical underpinnings of these areas.

(2) Stellar Structure and Evolution

Stellar structure and evolution includes the internal structureof stars, the structure and dynamics of stellar atmospheres,as well as stellar winds and mass-loss. Information is derivedfrom comparisons of model computations to photometric, spectroscopic, and most recently also interferometric observations.Current topics at ESO include, for instance, surface abundances, pulsating stars, mass-loss from evolved stars, and stellar activity.

(3) Stellar Populations

Stellar Populations include resolved and diffuse stellar populations in the nearby universe.
Current projects encompass research on the life and death of star clusters, the stellar content and kinematics of dwarf galaxies, the stellar/star cluster populations of nearby galaxies (usedto study their formation and evolution), black holes of various sizes...

4) Evolution of Galaxies and the ISM

Evolutions of Galaxies and ISM include star formation histories, morphological evolution, stellar mass assembly histories, metal enrichment histories, and AGNs. Current research projectsat ESO encompass the formation and evolution of distant galaxies,high-z clusters, environmental dependence of variousgalaxy properties, AGNs and their effects on galaxy evolution.

(5) Cosmology and the Early Universe

Cosmology and the Early Universe includes the study of the expansion history of the Universe and the properties of the "Dark Energy" that drives its acceleration. Current research activities at ESO Garching include the use of supernovae as cosmological distance indicators, studies of the large-scale distribution of matter with galaxy clusters and superclusters, and investigating the potential of the E-ELT in measuring cosmological parameters.
