ESO has no formal policy regarding Technology Transfer. It nevertheless recognises it as a valuable process and, within the constraints of its mandate and resources, provides active encouragement to the process.

Through the simple fact that ESO is developing state-of-the-art equipment and awards large contracts to industry for high-tech projects, Technology Transfer has been taking place for many years.

To promote the process, a survey has been carried out to identify and quantify past and present examples of Technology Transfer at ESO.
